WCL Walla Walla Sweets

Sweets Follow Lucas to Victory

June 4, 2016 - West Coast League (WCL)
Walla Walla Sweets News Release

WALLA WALLA, Wash- In the first game of the season, a pitcher's duel is expected with teams sending out its best arm. That is what fans got at Borleske Stadium on opening night as the Walla Walla Sweets (1-0) took down the Victoria HarbourCats (0-1) 2-1.

The star of the game was Sweets' pitcher Easton Lucas (Pepperdine). Coming off his All-Star season in the West Coast League last year, he spun a stellar four and two-thirds innings, giving up just three hits and one run while striking out eight. He struck out six in a row at one point.

The offense was provided in two different frames for the Sweets. Nick Nyquist (Gonzaga) brought in the game's first run, plating Hunter Villanueva (Fresno Pacific), in the first inning on an infield RBI single to second base. Victoria would then answer with an RBI double in the top of the second to tie the score.

The go-ahead run did not come until the fifth inning when nine-hole hitter Zach Weisz (Cal State Fullerton) singled back up the middle, scoring Connor Doyle (San Diego) and that would do it on the scoreboard.

The HarbourCats would threaten in the sixth with the bases loaded and two outs, but Garrett Atkinson (Whitman) induced a fly-out to end the threat he created by walking the bases loaded.

Kyle Narahara (Cal State Monterey Bay) came in in the ninth and struck out the side to cap off a 13 strikeout day for Sweets pitching.

The Sweets showed off the speed tonight, stealing five bases. Villanueva led the way with two for Walla Walla.

The Sweets and the HarbourCats will match-up in game two tomorrow night at 7:05. Walla Walla will turn to Jackson Weeg (Emory) to try for the series victory and Victoria will send Casey Costello (Orange Coast College) to the mound.
