Sweets Beat the Gems Behind Solid Pitching

Walla Walla Sweets News Release
Walla Walla, Wa- The Sweets took the final game and the series on Father's Day against the Klamath Falls Gems with a 3-2 win. The series was close from the start and nothing changed in the third game.
The Sweets (8-7) began the scoring in the bottom of the first with an RBI ground out by Clayton Ayers, but they had an opportunity to score more as they began the inning with the bases loaded and nobody out. A double play quickly turned that chance away after the Ayers RBI.
The Gems (3-12) then took the lead in the third inning. After Brian Pozos started off the inning with a hustle double into right center, he was moved to third on a ground out and knocked in with a sacrifice fly by Cody Poznanski. That tied the score at 1-1 and the Gems added another run with a little help from the Sweets' starting pitcher Addy Rincon. Following an Austin Fisher walk, Rincon threw a pick-off attempt past first base, down the right field line, which allowed Fisher to advance to third, but the throw there also got away and Fisher came around to score on two errors in one play by the Sweets.
The Gems held the lead until the fifth inning when Juan Gamez walked and scored two batters later on a safety squeeze by Dylan Mucha. That tie would not stay for long as the deadlock was broken by the Sweets in the sixth on an RBI single by David Geary to score Parker Coss.
The lead was threatened in the seventh by the Gems as they had two on and two outs. Klamath Falls sent left-handed pinch-hitter Payton Soicher up to the plate and the Sweets countered with a lefty of their own, Chris Tate. After an intense at-bat, Tate won by striking out Soicher on the ninth pitch.
Max Gamboa came on to close things out for the Sweets in the eighth and picked up the five out save. The Sweets, after a day off, will head to Cowlitz to face the Black Bears in a three game set before heading down to Klamath Falls for another series with the Gems.
