PCL1 Pacific Coast League

Sweeney, Figueroa Capture PCL Honors

August 11, 2003 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1) News Release

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo.– Last week's nine-game home-and-home series between the Colorado Springs Sky Sox and Nashville Sounds featured not only two pennant-contending teams battling, but also both Pacific Coast League Players of the Week, as Colorado Springs outfielder Mark Sweeney and Nashville starter Nelson Figueroa each won the League's weekly honors by excelling against each other beginning on August 4th and continuing through August 10th.

After going 2-for-4 in an 11-3 win over the Sounds in Nashville on August 5th, Sweeney, who lives in Scottsdale, Arizona, returned to Colorado Springs where his bat caught fire, driving in 15 runs in five games. On August 7th, the outfielder hit two home runs while going 3-for-4 with three runs scored and seven RBI in a 12-7 win over the Sounds, before coming back a day later to go 4-for-4 with a double and five more runs driven in. In a double-header on August 9th, Sweeney, in his first season in the Colorado Rockies system, went 2-for-3 in each contest, collecting a double and an RBI in both games.

The only game in which Sweeney didn't flourish was the contest that was pitched by Figueroa, who shut-out the Sky Sox on August 4th to win his League-lead tying 12th game of the season. The Brooklyn, New York native kept Colorado Springs off the scoreboard while yielding only three hits, one walk, and striking out eight for his third complete game of the season. It was a performance that also earned the right-hander a promotion to the Pittsburgh Pirates, who called him up on August 10th.
