Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders News Release

OH WHAT A NIGHT: Despite the addition of the rehabbing Curtis Granderson, the RailRiders' offensive woes at home continued as they fell on Thursday night to the Indianapolis Indians (Pittsburgh Pirates) in 11 innings, 2-1.

SOUR MELK: Outfielder Melky Mesa came on late defensively once Granderson's night concluded. He went 0-for-2 in his two plate appearances. That included reaching on an errant throw by catcher Tony Sanchez after he struck out for the 53rd time this season. Mesa trails only Low-A Hickory (Texas Rangers) center fielder Lewis Brinson (54) for the most whiffs in the minors. Mesa has struck out in eight of his last nine plate appearances and enters tonight in an 0-for-15 funk. His .226 average marks his worst contact clip since he was at .222 on April 14.

THE BARE MINIMUM: The RailRiders sent the minimum to the plate in seven of their 11 innings yesterday. The team had four men bat in the first and third innings, but failed to push a man beyond second in either frame. Out of their 37 innings on the series, the RailRiders have sent the minimum to the plate 19 times and four or fewer 29 times.

BREAK IT DOWN: During their four-game set against the IL's top pitching staff, the RailRiders assembled 124 at-bats. Among them were just 16 hits (11 singles) and an eyebrow-raising 41 strikeouts for a .129 team batting average. That single series lowered the team's overall contact clip from .254 to .239, good for the third-worst number in the IL. David Adams only played in three of the games but posted a quarter of the hits (4) and 40% of the extra-base knocks (2).

SOMETHING SORT OF GRANDISH: Granderson batted second as the RailRiders' starting right fielder last night. He went 1-for-3 with a single. All three of his batted balls in play went to the second baseman.

COTHAM CITY: Right-hander Caleb Cotham tossed two innings on Sunday before allowing just one run over 4.2 innings in his Triple-A debut last night. He struck out five and allowed just three hits, but that included a Brett Carroll homer.

ARE YOU TOO GOOD FOR YOUR HOME?: The RailRiders sit at 6-12 (.333) in home games with losses in six of seven while they have gone 12-2 (.857) on the road including wins in 12 of their last 13. The splits back-up the records. At home, the team is hitting .204/.310/.286 and averages 2.8 runs/game. On the road, the triple slashes rise to .283/.354/.433 and the team posts 5.0 runs/game. That makes for the largest home/road team batting average split in the IL. Also consider that four of the team's five doubleheaders have taken place on the road, making eight of the 14 road games seven-inning affairs, while the only two extra-inning games have come at home. Only three active players are hitting above .250 at home. That includes Jeff Farnham, who is 1-for-2 in his one home game played, and Granderson's single-game 1-for-3 showing last night. Eight of the 15 that have seen road playing time are hitting .302 or better away from Moosic. The home/road splits skew for the pitching staff as well. At home, the RailRiders' arms have assembled a 3.35 ERA with 15 home runs allowed over 161 innings. On the road, the ERA plummets to 2.42 with only four homers in 108 innings.

WHAT'S THE DELLIN?: Earlier today, Yankees GM Brian Cashman told multiple media outlets that Dellin Betances has shifted to the RailRiders bullpen. He went 2-2 with a 6.00 ERA in six starts and tossed five hitless innings for a win last time out at Gwinnett on Sunday.

ROSTER MOVES: Originally, the Yankees announced that lefty Juan Cedeno had been placed on SWB's DL yesterday. A correction was announced shortly before game time that he was instead granted his release.
