SwampDogs Split Double Header with RedWolves

The SwampDogs had an amazing night on the mound, but they still split the double header with the Florence RedWolves.
In game one, the Dogs struck first in the second inning after Derek Gibson (Southeast Missouri) reached base with a single and later stole second base. DJ Hoagboon (University at Albany) drove a single through the left side of the infield to score Gibson, giving Fayetteville a 1-0 lead.
That lead would hold until the final inning because Shawn Talkington (Emporia State) pitched a gem through six innings and he allowed just one hit and racked up three strikeouts.
Down to their final three outs, Brad Elwood (UNC-Charlotte) led of the inning with a fly ball to left-center field. Both Hoagboon and Brian Celsi (University of California) called for the ball and Hoagboon made the catch despite colliding with Celsi in full sprint. There was about a five-minute break in the game for the trainers to check up on the outfielders and Hoagboon eventually left the game with an upper body injury.
That break was enough to throw off Talkington's rhythm as he hit the next batter and first baseman Zachary Bellinger (The College of St. Rose) smashed a two-run home run to straight away right field which eventually won the game for Florence.
Talkington suffered his first loss of the season despite a stat line of seven innings, two hits, two runs, and one walk.
It was a different story in game two as the SwampDogs bats came to life and Garrett Baugh (Tennessee Tech) threw an impressive start.
"We just tried to come back and get our pitchers some more runs. Talk(ington) threw a good first game and he got the loss on just one swing, so we tried to get Garrett more run support for the second game," right fielder John Rooney said.
It did not take long for Fayetteville to give Baugh some run support. After John Rooney (Siena) and Michael Timm (Wright State) reached base, Gibson drove them in with a single to right field to give the Dogs the early 2-0 lead at the end of one.
That lead would only increase in the fifth inning when the SwampDogs put on a five-spot on five hits, including two doubles to knock Alex Satterfield (South Carolina) out of the game with seven earned runs.
John Rooney finished game two batting 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs, Gibson went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and first baseman Ryan Nagle (University of Illinois) went 2-for-3 with a double, triple and two runs scored.
Baugh pitched six strong innings in route to his second win on the season and he allowed just one run on four hits and three strikeouts.
He was perfect through three and two-thirds innings until Blake Massey (Alabama-Huntsville) singled in the fourth.
Jack Van Horn took the mound in the seventh for his sixth appearance on the season and he struck out back-to-back RedWolves to secure the SwampDogs tenth win of the CPL season.
"If we start losing intensity or not being focused (head coach Darrell Handelman) will be honest... he's a fun coach to play for," Rooney said.
Fayetteville heads to Asheboro to take on the Copperheads tomorrow night before returning home on Friday for a chance for redemption against the Wilmington Sharks.
The Coastal Plain League is the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. Celebrating its 17th season in 2013, the CPL features 14 teams playing North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats.
