SwampDogs Snap Sharks' Winning Streak

July 8, 2016 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilmington Sharks News Release

After a late night in Virginia, the Wilmington Sharks' (21-12, 5-1) offense couldn't do much on Friday night, as their five game win streak came to end with a 2-1 loss to the Fayetteville Swampdogs (11-21, 1-4).

The Swampdogs took the lead in the third inning when they loaded the bases and scored on a wild pitch. They added another on a fielder's choice, and took a 2-0 lead. That ended up being all the offense they would need, as the Sharks were held to just one run that came across in the seventh. Nick Rotola (Oral Roberts) reached on an error, and Alec Bohm (Wichita State) singled to put runners at the corners. Rotola scored, but only after a double play cost the Sharks a chance to tie the game.

In the eighth inning, the Sharks had another chance to tie the game. With two outs, Brett Smith (Bucknell) and Mark Donadio (Fordham) singled to put runners at the corners. Clark Scolamiero (South Carolina) lined one to left but a diving catch from Fayetteville's Dan Leckie (Lafayette) ended the inning. Bohm reached second in the ninth, but a strikeout and a fly out ended the game.

The win went to Nick Yobbi (3-1). He threw seven and two thirds innings, with six hits, one unearned run, no walks and three strikeouts. Robby Casey (0-1) took the loss, pitching four innings, allowing two runs on four hits, two walks and no strikeouts. Mike Austin (1) pitched for the four out save with one and one third of an inning, no runs and no hits, with one walk and one strikeout.

The Sharks hit the road on Saturday for their final game before the all star break at Morehead City.
