FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - It took until the sixth inning for the game's first run to score, and in the end the Fayetteville SwampDogs defeated the Forest City Owls 3-2 in a pitcher's duel on Thursday night.
Ryan Stamler (Fr./The Citadel) got the nod for the SwampDogs (1-2) and worked through some challenges to toss 5.2 scoreless innings. Stamler walked only one batter and struck out six, while allowing four hits before getting the hook.
Nolan Mullen (Soph./Furman) relieved Stamler in the sixth and got out of a jam, and tossed a blemish-less seventh inning.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Alex Liquori (Jr./Kennesaw State) collected a one out single, and stole second base. Two batters and a wild pitch later, Bligh Madris (Fr./Colorado Mesa) drove him home with a single.
The Owls (0-2) would scratch two runs across in the top of the eighth inning against Kent Williams (Soph./Indiana) to take a 2-1 lead. The 'Dogs would strike back quickly in the bottom half of the inning, when Austin Upshaw (Fr./Kennesaw State) drove home Liquori and Cam Whitehead (Soph./Furman).
Williams got the win, improving to 1-0 on the season, and Reid Howell was tagged with the loss, falling to 0-2.
