SwampDogs' 18 Hits Overwhelm Sharks

June 2, 2016 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Wilmington Sharks News Release

For the second straight night, the Wilmington Sharks (1-2) saw the Fayetteville Swampdogs (2-1) tally double-digit hits as the Sharks fell again to the Swampdogs, 12-3.

The game started as a pitching duel, with each team held scoreless through the first three innings. Fayetteville finally broke open the scoring with four runs in the fourth, and then proceeded to score at least one run in four of the last five innings.

Wilmington's offense was kept quiet all night, as they were held to just three hits. They still found ways to score, as Alec Bohm (Wichita State) drove home two when his long fly to center was dropped. The Sharks cut the lead to 6-3 with the 2 RBI error from Bohm. Yet, the Swampdogs piled six more runs on in the ninth inning to seal their victory.

The win went to Nick Yobbi (1-0), after he pitched seven innings and allowed three unearned runs on three hits, with two walks and five strikeouts. Ethan Wortkoetter (0-1) took the loss for the Sharks. He lasted seven and one third innings, allowing 13 hits and six earned runs, walking two and striking out six.

Wilmington hits the road for an overnight trip this weekend. They'll face Forest City on Friday and Gastonia on Saturday. The Sharks take one more trip on Monday, to Wilson, before returning home on Tuesday to host the Petersburg Generals. That game will start at 7:05, and feature $2 Tacos for fans at The Shark Tank.
