SwampBats Can't Recover from Big Valley First

HOLYOKE, MA - Valley's seven-run first proved to be the difference in the game as the Blue Sox (13-4) topped the Keene SwampBats (8-11) by a score of 8-3 on Friday night at Mackenzie Stadium in Holyoke.

In the afore-mentioned first, Valley plated the seven runs on four hits to go along with two walks and two errors in the inning. Simon Whiteman (Yale) delivered a two-run single in the inning, while Allbry Major (Xavier) came through with an RBI single as well.

SwampBats starter Kyle Whitten (Virginia) gave up seven runs (two earned) on four hits to go along with a walk and a strikeout in 0.2 IP. The right-hander was dealt the loss and drops to 0-1 on the year.

Keene's bullpen allowed just one run over the final 7.2 IP and combined for nine strikeouts.

RHP Griff McGarry (Virginia), RHP Jeffrey Praml (Southern New Hampshire), RHP Erik Kaiser (Vanderbilt), RHP Perez Nichols (Broward), RHP Justin Willis (Vanderbilt) and RHP Andrew Houde (Keene State) all had scoreless outings in relief.

The SwampBats took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first as Michael Woodworth (UConn) reached on a fielder's choice, stole second, took third on an error and swiped home when Charlie Concannon (St. Joseph's) was caught in a rundown between first and second.

Valley starter Cooper Bradford (North Florida) gave up the one run on four hits while walking one and fanning nine in 6.0 IP to earn the win and improve to 3-1.

In the top of the seventh, a pair of walks put two men on and RBI singles from Mitchell Golden (Georgia Southern) and Jacob Koos (Stetson) brought the SwampBats within 8-3.

Koos (3-5, RBI) tied his season-high with three hits for manager Lyndon Coleman's squad.

Keene is back in action on Sunday night when they battle the Vermont Mountaineers at Montpelier Recreation Field. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. and RHP Jake McLinskey (0-2, 3.60) out of Kennesaw State University will get the start for the SwampBats.
