COLUMBUS, GA – Defensive specialist Demont Smith intercepted three passes, returning one 52-yards for a score as the Swamp Foxes picked up their first road win of 2003, 56-40 over the Columbus Wardogs.

Charleston also snapped a 10-game road losing skid dating back to last season and took a 3-0 lead in the all-time series.

"The win was nice and I really should be smiling, but again, we played sloppy, still with too many penalties," said a subdued head coach Rik Richards, who earned his first road victory as an af2 head coach. "I'm glad we got the win, but I'm not going to be totally happy until we've fixed the mental errors."

Quarterback John Turman led the Foxes' offense to its most productive output of the season. He completed 18-of-33 passes for 223 yards and five touchdowns. Mike Chandler caught a pair of scoring strikes, tallying 21 yards on three receptions.

Joe Judge caught a game-long 45-yard pass on his way to 63 yards receiving on four catches to lead the team. Leroy McFadden tallied a pair of scores on the night, one rushing and one through the air. He finished with five receptions for 62 yards.

Offensive specialist Terrance Quattlebaum added one score on four catches for 42 yards in the win.

For the fifth consecutive game, Charleston's offense outgained its opponent, tallying 235 yards as compared to 209 by the ‘Dogs.

Late in the first half, the Wardogs threatened with a third and goal from the inside the five-yard line. Yet, Demont Smith intercepted a Mike Gluski pass in the end zone, ending the threat and giving the Foxes the ball out on the five.

With four seconds on the clocka before the break, the Swamp Foxes' appeared to be playing it safe with a completed pass into the flat to Leroy McFadden. However, after breaking a pair of tackles, McFadden lateraled the ball to a streaking Marlon Moye-Moore, who raced the remaining 29 yards untouched to give Charleston a 27-21 halftime lead.

"It was a designed hook-and-ladder that simply went farther than it had been designed, but it worked," sad Richards on the half-ending play.

The Swamp Foxes return to the Lowcountry for the first of two consecutive home games next Saturday, May 10 as they host the Florida Firecats at the North Charleston Coliseum. Kick off is set for 7:30 pm.
