Charleston Swamp Foxes News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC - The Charleston Swamp Foxes step out of divisional play this Friday night when they travel to the unbeaten Augusta Stallions in arenafootball2 action. The game can be heard locally on 1340 ESPN Radio when Matt Dreyer has the call.
Charleston (3-3) ended its three-game road losing skid with a home win in division over Jacksonville 67-63 last Saturday night. The Swamp Foxes haven't won a road game since defeating the Greensboro Prowlers 67-32 in the season opener.
Augusta (6-0) is riding a six-game winning streak this season, which includes a pair of one-point wins. The Stallions are one of three teams in af2 still with unblemished records. They defeated the Carolina Rhinos 56-32.
The 6-0 start matches what the Stallions did in 2001, however they dropped seven of their last 10 to miss the playoffs last season.
The Swamp Foxes are 1-3 on the road, which included the three-game losing skid, while the Stallions are a perfect 2-0 at home. The two teams have met twice with Augusta taking both meetings â one in Charleston and the other in Augusta.
Both squads are strong at the quarterback position. Charleston's two-headed QB of veteran Ray Issac (Youngstown State) and rookie Mike Bath has worked so far this season. Bath continues to rank second in af2 in quarterback rating. Augusta's Glen Gauntt ranks sixth in passer rating and third in passing yards, averaging 252 per contest.
Since taking over as the kick returner for the Swamp Foxes, Billy Cook (Grand Valley State) has catapulted the Charleston return average from near the bottom of the 34-team rankings to 12th. Cook leads the league in return average (29.4 yds/return) which includes one touchdown from a week ago.
Augusta's strong point is its offense. The Stallions rank sixth in total offense and fifth in pass offense. Conversely, the Swamp Foxes' defense ranks higher than their offense. On the defensive side of the ball, Charleston ranks 14th in total defense, 15th versus the pass. In addition, the Foxes rank third in turnover margin with a +9 average.
This trip is the first of two-in-a-row for the Swamp Foxes, who return to divisional play next Friday night at Florida.
Game time is set for 7:30 pm at the Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center in Augusta, GA.
