Charleston Swamp Foxes News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC â Needing a win to keep playoff hopes alive, the Swamp Foxes scored 30 in the first half en route to a 52-36 win over the visiting Columbus Wardogs Saturday night in front of 4,161 fans at the North Charleston Coliseum.
The win propelled the Swamp Foxes over .500 to 8-7, with the eight wins setting a team record. It also kept the Foxes amidst a ever-tightening af2 race for not only the Atlantic Division crown, but also the 2003 playoffs.
Quarterback Johnny Turman was held to a season-low 157 yards passing, completing 12-of-24 passes and four touchdowns. Backup signal caller Tim Hicks completed 1-of-2 attempts for a touchdown.
Leroy McFadden and Joe Judge each caught four passes apiece to lead the Swamp Foxes. McFadden totaled 48 yards and two scores while Judge totaled 26 yards. Mike Chandler equaled McFadden's pair of touchdowns, only hauling in two passes for 59 yards.
Ironman of the Game Marlon Moye-Moore rushed four times for nine yards and a touchdown, but was most impressive with a 36-yard screen pass reception that he rumbled into the end zone, dragging several would-be tacklers along.
Defensively, the Swamp Foxes intercepted Wardog QB Sherard Poteete three times, including a pick on a two-point conversion try that Michael Brown returned 48 yards for two points. Brown, the game's ADT Defensive Player of the Game only tallied one and a half total tackles, but broke up five passes with an interception for the Foxes.
Charleston jumped out to a 16-0 lead after the first quarter, holding the Wardogs scoreless for the first 15 minutes. Chandler caught a TD pass from quarterback Turman on the game's first play from scrimmage, a 32-yard strike to put the Foxes on the board first. Moye-Moore added a three-yard scamper and Rob Bironas nailed a career-long 45-yard field goal to push the score to 16.
The teams traded a pair scores in the second, with the Foxes holding onto a 30-14 advantage at the break.
The Swamp Foxes return home wrap up their 2003 home schedule next Saturday, July 26, for a battle with the Richmond Speed at the North Charleston Coliseum. Kickoff is set for 7:30 pm.
