Charleston Swamp Foxes News Release

BOSSIER CITY, LA – The Charleston Swamp Foxes created six turnovers on defense and posted the second-highest scoring total of the season to keep playoff hopes alive with a convincing 64-33 win over the slumping Bossier City Battle Wings Friday night.

The win evened Charleston's season tally at 7-7, tying a team record for wins in a season. It was also the Foxes' fourth road win in 2003, the most in the team's four-year existence.

"I'm happy with the win but it could have been better," said a subdued head coach Rik Richards following his team's victory. "Bossier City has a few great athletes, but they're not very solid up front and overall, not a very good football team. It's a win, but it's a win versus an average team."

"We've got one common goal right now and that's to win out and keep the faith for making the playoffs," added Richards.

For the Swamp Foxes, Antoine Calloway and Leroy McFadden each tallied a pair of scores, with kicker Rob Bironas nailing a team single-game record three field goals. Rookie fullback Marlon Moye-Moore rushed for one tally and threw a TD pass, accounting for a pair of scores in the win.

Calloway became the Swamp Foxes all-time leading receiver, setting a career record for receptions, while McFadden tied the team record for touchdowns in a season and broke the mark for points in a season. Bironas set three records on the night, including single-game field goals, successful field goals in a season, and became the career field goal leader, currently with 10 on the year. Quarterback Johnny Turman continued his hot streak, tossing four TD passes in only three quarters of action. Back-up quarterback Tim Hicks saw his second action of his rookie season, tossing a TD pass to McFadden and rumbling in from 13 yards out for his first-career rushing score.

Defensively, the Swamp Foxes harassed Bossier City rookie quarterback Payton Perrett all game long, sacking the youthful signal caller four times and delivering numerous hits. Perrett threw four interceptions and gave up a fumble as the Foxes defense returned to its mid-season form.

The Swamp Foxes held the af2's top-rated defense for nine-consecutive weeks before falling to fourth following the home loss to Greensboro. Richards rallied the troops, however, as Charleston held Bossier City under 200 yards of total offense and a negative-three rushing total.

Charleston jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first quarter as Marlon Moye-Moore rumbled in for his seventh rushing score on the season and Rob Bironas nailed a 17-yard field goal.

Bossier City pulled to within three at 10-7 to end the first quarter, but the Swamp Foxes answered with 24 points in the decisive second quarter. Antoine Calloway added both of his scores, while Joe Judge notched his lone tally of the night. The quarter was capped off by a career-long 36-yard field goal by Bironas to lead 34-14 at the break. Bossier City closed to within 14 points early in the third scoring on its first possession of the second stanza, 34-20, but the Foxes answered with a 43-yard scoring strike from Turman to McFadden. Charleston capitalized on Battle Wing turnovers, tallying four consecutive scores to end the third and start the fourth quarters to put the game out of reach.

The Swamp Foxes return home next Saturday night, July 19, for a battle with the Columbus Wardogs at the North Charleston Coliseum. Kickoff is set for 7:30 pm. The Swamp Fox tailgate zone, featuring live music from "Flat Front Tire," face painting, balloons, and jump castles for children, starts at 5:00 pm.
