Vermont Mountaineers News Release
KEENE, N.H. - The Vermont Mountaineers dropped their third straight game on Thursday night in Keene, as they fell 5-3 at the hands of the Keene Swamp Bats in the New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL).
The Mountaineers got five full innings out of starter Michael Fairchild (Olympia, Wash./Azusa Pacific), who allowed three runs (all earned) on four hits, walking two and striking out two. His counterpart for Keene, Ryan Avidano (Fayetteville, Ga./ Georgia), threw six solid innings, allowing just one run on five hits. Avidano walked one and struck out four.
Keene scored runs in the third, fourth, and sixth innings to get the win. Parker Sniatynski (Brookfield, Wiss./St. Louis) came home on a wild pitch in the third to get them on the board. Jamal Wade (Owings Mills, Md./Maryland College Park) added two more the next inning when he knocked a two-run homer. The home run, which drove in Garrett Christman (Noblesville, Ind./Butler), was one of three hits that Wade had on the day.
The Swamp Bats got another run in the sixth when Wade scored on a wild pitcher. Evan McFarland (Cottonwood, Ariz./Lock Haven) capped Keene's offensive day in the bottom of the eighth when he added an insurance run with an RBI single.
Vermont's day offensively was highlighted by a pair of runs scored by leadoff man Joe Tietjen (Waxhaw, N.C./UNC Asheville). The center fielder got them going in the top of the first when he took the fifth pitch of the game out of the yard for a solo homerun.
The Vermont bats went quiet, though, until the bottom of the eighth. Mike Osinski (Vestal, N.Y./Longwood) got them going early in the frame when he knocked an RBI double that drove in Tietjen. The 'Neers got one more when Osisnki scored on a passed ball. That was all they could muster offensively, though, and it wasn't enough to get past the first-place Swamp Bats.
Avidano got the win for Keene, while Fairchild suffered the loss for the Mountianeers. Michael LeBeau (Bellows Falls, Vt./Castleton St.) picked up the five-out save after coming in in the eighth and allowing no runs on one hit.
The Mountaineers will be in action again tomorrow night when they travel to North Adams, Mass. to take on the Steeple Cats. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 at Joe Wolfe Field. The game can be heard on CBS Sports 1240 AM WSKI and online through The NECBL Broadcast Network.
