Swamp Bats Explode For Seven Runs In First Inning, Keene Downs North Adams 8-2

KEENE, N.H. - Right fielder Brett DeLoach (Blackshear, GA/Georgia) capped a seven-run first inning with a grand slam to centerfield as the Keene Swamp Bats went on to defeat the North Adams SteepleCats, 8-2, in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action at Alumni Field on Tuesday night.

Keene improves to 5-2 overall on the season and 5-1 in the Western Division. The SteepleCats fall to 1-9.

Swamp Bats left-handed starting pitcher Timothy Flight (Portsmouth, RI/Southern NH) earned the win going seven innings, yielding just four hits, two runs (both earned), no walks and six strikeouts. North Adams' starter Brian Gilbert (Toms River, NJ/Seton Hall) was handed the loss on six innings pitched, 10 hits, eight runs (all earned), two walks and one punchout.

In the bottom of the first inning, Keene's 1-8 hitters all reached base with catcher David Lyon (Emporium, PA/Kent St.), left fielder Kevin Brown (Northborough, MA/Bryant Univ.) and third baseman Ryan Fuller (Lyme, CT/UConn) all collecting RBI's in the frame before DeLoach hit a line drive grand slam home run to centerfield - his second homer of the season - giving the Swamp Bats a 7-0 advantage early on.

North Adams responded in the top of the second inning as third baseman Cameron Griffin (Jonesboro, GA/Columbus St. Univ.) launched a two-run home run to left centerfield plating first baseman Sam Russell (Grandville, MI/Central Michigan) to cut into the deficit, 7-2.

Gilbert kept the SteepleCats in the ball game despite the 7-2 score retiring eight-straight batters before Keene tacked on another run in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI single by Fuller scoring Lyon from second base for an 8-2 lead.

Swamp Bats relief pitcher David Mahoney (Colchester, CT/UConn) closed out the contest tossing scoreless innings on two hits.

Designated hitter Chantz Mack (Homestead, FL/Univ. of Miami) notched the SteepleCats only multi-hit performance of the night going 2-for-4 from the leadoff spot.

Keene returns to action on Thursday, June 23 in an exhibition contest at home against the Team USA Collegiate National Team at 6:30 pm at Alumni Field.
