Keene Swamp Bats News Release
The Swamp Bats turned things around on Monday night, beating up on the Sanford Mainers 8-3.
The Swamp Bats hitters jumped all over the Mainers' starter EJ Ashworth in the first inning, and chased him out of the game later in the fourth.
JP Sportman drove in Zach Lucas for the first Keene run. Brian O'Grady, the junior from Rutgers, in his first plate appearance as a Swamp Bat, notched an RBI single himself. O'Grady ended his opening night with the Swamp Bats 4-5 with three RBIs and two runs scored.
The Swamp Bats ended up scoring four in the first inning, two in the third and once in the fourth and sixth innings.
The starter for the Swamp Bats, Nathan Kirby, threw the best start of the season so far for the Swamp Bats. The freshmen from the University of Virginia went six scoreless innings, allowing only three hits, and striking out 10 Mainers along the way.
Paul Covelle came on to relieve Kirby in the seventh and surrendered one run, an unearned run, in two innings of work. Dustin Cook came on in the ninth and gave up two runs on an RBI double from Jake Thomas, but avoided further damage as Keene defeated Sanford 8-3.
The win is just the third of the season for the Swamp Bats, as they push their record to 3-9.
Keene will be back at Alumni Field on Tuesday night to take on the Saratoga Brigade. First pitch will be set for 6:30 p.m.
