ROSEMONT - Chicago Bandits first-year catcher Gwen Svekis has been named to the softball staff at Indiana University as a volunteer assistant, the Hoosiers' athletic department announced Monday afternoon.

Svekis, whom the Bandits selected third overall in the 2018 NPF Draft following a historic career at Oregon, currently holds a .231 clip at the plate with one home run and five RBI across 13 games at the professional level. She delivered her first career long ball during a 21-0 rout against the Beijing Shougang Eagles on July 12.

"We are excited about this tremendous opportunity for Gwen," Bandits general manager Toni Calmeyn said. "She's been a terrific addition to our ball club and prepares herself well both on and off the field. We look forward to seeing her continue to grow as a member of the coaching staff at Indiana."

During her storied career at Oregon, Svekis guided the Ducks to the Women's College World Series in three of her four seasons behind the plate. The 2018 NFCA Catcher of the Year posted career-high marks in home runs (17) and RBI (60) during her final collegiate campaign. She recorded 45 home runs and 169 RBI throughout her career.

"Some of my mentors in the softball world had nothing but incredible things to say about the IU coaching staff," Svekis said in a statement released by the Indiana athletic department. "When I heard that there was an opening, I was so excited to pursue the position ... I'm also extremely excited to pass on the knowledge I have gained to the girls on the team and watch this program grow towards its potential."

Svekis and the Bandits will be back in action Tuesday when they begin a six-game stretch against the Cleveland Comets. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. at Firestone Stadium in Akron, Ohio, and the game will be broadcast via NPFTV.
