Mississippi Surge News Release

Jeff Grant scored with 11 seconds left in regulation time lifting the Mississippi Surge to a 4-3 win over the Mississippi RiverKings Friday night at the Landers Center in Southaven, Miss. It's the second win in as many games for the Surge over its in-state rival.

Two weeks ago, the Surge handed the RiverKings their first loss of the season in a 5-0 shutout at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum. Friday night's win dealt the RiverKings their first home loss of the season.

Two players playing in their first game for the Surge figured prominently in the win. Rookie goaltender Dan Clarke turned aside 25 shots in picking up the win in his first professional start. Left winger Branden Kosolofsky, acquired in a trade earlier this week from Augusta had two assists, including helping set up Grant's game winner.

The RiverKings opened the scoring late in the first period when Darrell Stoddard beat Clarke with only 20 seconds left in the period. The home team extended its lead to 2-0 when Nick Walsh scored at 8:07 of the second period.

A rash of RiverKing penalties allowed the Surge to finally break through against RiverKing goaltender Matthew Krahn. Five straight penalties in the first 11 and half minutes had the Surge skating with a man advantage for a good part of the middle stanza and Corey Tamblyn scored on a power play at 13:27 to cut the RiverKing lead to 2-1.

Defenseman James Isaacs tied the game for the Surge with the team's second power play goal of the game at 2:11 of the third period. The Surge got its first lead of the game when another defenseman, Nicholas Kuqali, scored his second goal of the season at 7:15. The RiverKings knotted it at 3-3 on a power play goal by Nick Walsh three minutes later. It appeared the teams were headed to overtime before Grant provided the dramatic game winner.

The Surge gets right back in action Saturday night at home, hosting the Huntsville Havoc at 7:05. The Surge offers a child's price ticket for only $10 on all walk-up ticket purchases.
