Mississippi Surge News Release

Five different players scored goals for the Mississippi Surge, which won its third straight game, a 5-2 victory at Fayetteville over the FireAntz on Sunday.

It was the second straight win for the Surge, over Fayetteville, and for the second straight game, a melee erupted which saw Surge goalie Kiefer Smiley get in a fight with his counterpart. This time Erik Hudson was his antagonist with just 1:38 left to play. The Surge had chased Fayetteville starting goalie Dan Brown from the game, after scoring five goals in the first two periods against him. Brown had fought Smiley during Friday's game.

Mark Versteeg-Lytwyn opened the scoring for the Surge on a breakaway just 1:21 into the game. Before the first period ended, Rob Campbell and James Isaacs stretched the Mississippi lead to 3-0. Ironically, there were no penalties in the first period, a stark contrast to the contentious final minute and a half.

Bobby Reed got Fayetteville on the board, at 6:35 of the second period. But Shawn Skelly restored the Surge three goal lead with a power play goal at 13:14. Tyler Ruel wrapped up the Surge scoring with 1:02 left in the second period.

Former Surge defenseman Matt Rigtrup completed the scoring in the game, for Fayetteville, with 12:39 left to play. The game was relatively mild with only five minor penlaties for ten total penalty minutes, until tempers exploded in the final minute and a half. Along with goaltenders Smiley and Hudson being ejected, each team had two other players kicked out of the game. Matt Kinnunen and Isaacs left early for the Surge and Kyle McNeil and Matt Smyth of Fayetteville took their leave, also before the final buzzer.

Not only is the victory the third straight for Mississippi, it is the sixth game in the last seven the Surge has earned at least one point in the standings. The Surge will return to action Tuesday night against Pensacola at 7:05 at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum. It will be $5 fun night presented by the Beau Rivage Casino and Resort with tickets available for just $5.
