January 22, 2012 - SPHL (SPHL)
Augusta RiverHawks News Release
The Augusta RiverHawks scored more goals than any Southern Professional Hockey League team has during the 2011-12 season as they defeated the Pensacola Ice Flyers 12-2 Saturday night in Florida.
The RiverHawks' 12 goals were the highest of any team this season, snapping the previous high of nine scored by the Huntsville Havoc on November 12th.
The team's offense was spread throughout the lineup. Leading the way offensively for the RiverHawks was forward Jim Gehring as he scored two goals and added a pair of assists. Gehring's second goal was his 30th of the season, making him the first player in the SPHL to reach that plateau this season.
Forward Egor Mironov and Defenseman Jason Price each had three point nights, but even more impressively they both finished the game with a plus-minus rating of +5. Forwards Brendan Taylor and Neil Graham also had three-point games, each of them scoring two goals and adding an assist. For Taylor it was his first two goals of the season.
The game was a rout from start to finish, as the RiverHawks scored eight-straight goals before allowing Pensacola to get on the board with a Mike Carter goal in the third period. The RiverHawks scored three goals in the first period, and then added four in both the second and third. The Ice Flyers capped the scoring with a Matthew Robertson goal with just 40 seconds left in the game.
RiverHawks' goaltender Jon Olthuis snapped a two-game losing streak by making 35 saves to pick up the win. The win was Olthuis' ninth of the season.
The win looms large in the standings for the RiverHawks, as they extended their lead over the Knoxville Ice Bears to five points in the race for first place in the SPHL. The Ice Bears have played three fewer games than the RiverHawks, but have won just two of their past seven games.
The RiverHawks are back in action on Phoenix Refrigeration Ice at the James Brown Arena Friday, February 10th as the RiverHawks play the Fayetteville FireAntz. The puck drops at 7:35pm.Tickets for the game are available through the RiverHawks' office and the James Brown Arena box office.
