Mississippi Surge News Release

BILOXI, MS -- The Mississippi Surge extended their unbeaten streak to 11 games with a 5-3 win over the Columbus Cottonmouths at the Mississippi Coast Coliseum on Wednesday night.

Columbus grabbed a 1-0 lead just 31 seconds into the first period when Jesse Cole banged home the rebound of a shot from Orrin Hergott. Mississippi tied the game at the 5:18 mark of the first when Mike Richard blasted a shot from the low slot through the legs of Columbus goaltender Chad Rycroft.

Andy Boudreau grabbed a 2-1 lead for Mississippi just 3:41 into the second period when he backhanded the rebound of a shot from Matt Zultek past Rycroft. Zultek then extended Mississippi's lead to two with his 18th power-play goal of the season when his centering pass was deflected by a Columbus player into the Cottonmouths' own net.

Dan Leslie's goal late in the second period cut the Surge lead to one, but Chris Ferazzoli restored the two-goal lead with a power-play goal at 4:59 of the third period when he rifled a shot past Rycroft from the low left circle to make the score 4-2 in favor of Mississippi. Orrin Hergott drew Columbus within one again with a power-play goal at 10:06 of the third.

After killing a penalty late in the third period, Columbus pulled Rycroft in favor of an extra attacker, but Chris Greene capitalized on a turnover and scored an empty-net goal to seal the 5-3 Surge victory.

Ryan Senft made 28 saves to earn the win, and the Surge went 2-for-5 on the power play.

The Surge return home on January 21 when they face off against the Pensacola Ice Flyers at 7:30 p.m. Tickets for all Surge home games start as low as $8 and you can purchase your tickets by calling (228) 287-PUCK!
