SPHL Players, Teams On Record Pace

January 6, 2010 - SPHL (SPHL) News Release

CHARLOTTE, NC (January 6, 2010) - As the SPHL approaches the midway point of the 2009-2010 season, fans around the league should be keeping a close eye on the record book the rest of the way as several individual and team benchmarks are in danger of falling.

With 31 goals in 25 games, Fayetteville's Rob Sich is currently on pace to finish the season with 69 goals, which would shatter the current mark of 44 currently held by former Ice Bear and current Knoxville assistant coach K.J. Voorhees. In addition, Mississippi's Matt Zultek is on track for 46 goals, which would also surpass the current mark set back in the 2004-2005 season.

Zultek is also on his way to establishing a new standard for power-play tallies as his 17 goals with the man advantage is already tied for third-most in a single season. At his current pace, his projection of 34 power-play goals will demolish the current record of 25 set by Columbus' Ryan Rutz in 2006-2007.

While Rob Sich is on track to set a new goal-scoring record, his linemate Chris Leveille is streaking toward a new mark for assists as well. With 36 assists in 25 games, Leveille is projected to finish the season with 81 assists, surpassing the current mark of 73 set in 2004-2005 by Knoxville's Kevin Swider.

Several goaltending marks are also in danger of falling as Huntsville's Mark Sibbald enters the second half of the season having not lost in regulation, posting an 11-0-2 win/loss record. Currently leading the SPHL with a goals-against-average of 1.90 and a.941 save percentage, Sibbald is poised to eclipse the current records of 2.45 (Tim Haun, Jacksonville, 2007-2008) and.924 (Andrew Gallant, Knoxville, 2008-2009).

With their goaltender having such an outstanding season, it is no surprise that the Huntsville Havoc are on pace to set new SPHL records for wins, points and winning percentage. If Huntsville is able to maintain their current winning percentage of.771, they would finish the regular season with 37 wins and 86 points, breaking the current mark of 36 wins (held by Columbus and Knoxville) and 79 points set in 2005-2006 by the Ice Bears.

With a hotly contested race in the standings and several new records on the horizon, the second half of the season is shaping up to be one of the most exciting in the SPHL's six-year history.
