ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (July 5, 2003) â The Atlantic City Surf split its doubleheader with the Newark Bears on Saturday evening at the Sandcastle.
In game one, it was the Eddie Lara show as the Newark first baseman cranked two three-run homers and drove in a total of seven runs to lead the Bears over the Surf, 9-1.
Lara, who briefly played with the Surf earlier in the season, hit his first long ball in the first inning after Rickey Henderson drew a leadoff walk and Michael Coleman followed with a base-hit.
Pete Maestrales, another former Surf player, reached on an error to lead off the second and advanced to third base on a Martinez single. After Maestrales scored on a wild pitch, Henderson and Coleman both walked to set up Lara for his second three-run blast to left field, giving the Bears a 7-0 lead they would hold on to.
Lara drove in his seventh RBI on a groundout to the second baseman in the fourth inning.
Newark starter and former Major Leaguer Jaime Navarro (4-1) took care of the Surf offense, tossing all seven innings and allowing just one run on five hits and three strikeouts.
Henderson, making his first appearance in Atlantic City, drew four walks and scored three runs for the Bears.
John Denny, Jr., had a sacrifice fly to centerfield in the second to drive in Jose Velazquez, who doubled, for Atlantic City's lone run.
In the nightcap, a big five-run fourth inning led by Chad Gambill's three-run homer lifted the Surf past the Bears, 9-7.
Down 7-4, Denny, Jr., singled and was driven in on Ric Johnson's triple. Johnson would score on Brandon Jackson's sacrifice fly to centerfield to bring Atlantic City within one run.
Juan Thomas was then hit by a pitch and Jose Velazquez walked, setting the stage for Gambill's mammoth three-run shot to deep centerfield, giving the Surf the lead for the first time on the day.
Newark started the game where they left off in game one, as Henderson drew a leadoff walk in the first inning and Coleman followed with a two-run homer. Lara, Wil Quintana and Jason Torres each doubled to give Newark a 4-0 lead.
The Surf countered with three runs in the second inning after Jose Velazquez, Chad Gambill and Raul Marval each doubled and Willy Ruiz had an RBI groundout.
Ahead by one run in the top of the fourth, Newark tagged on two more runs on an error by third baseman Brandon Jackson that allowed Henderson and Eddy Martinez to score.
Surf reliever Travis Thompson (3-2) tossed two scoreless innings to pick up the win while closer Randi Mallard tossed a scoreless ninth to pick up his 15th save of the season.
With the split, the Surf and the Bears each move to 30-31 on the season.
ON DECK: The Surf and the Bears resume their series on Sunday, July 6, at 5:05 p.m., at the Sandcastle.
