Atlantic City Surf News Release

Atlantic City, N.J. - The Atlantic City Surf of the Can-Am League have announced the signing of righthanded pitcher Walker Whitley. In addition, the club traded righthanded relief pitcher Matt Pike to Bridgeport of the independent Atlantic League in exchange for a player to be named later.

Whitley joins the Surf after spending the 2007 season, his first as a professional, with Anderson of the independent South Coast League. There, he went 2-1 with a 3.63 ERA in 13 relief appearances, striking out 17 hitters in 17.1 innings of work. Previously, Whitley pitched collegiately at Florida International University. In 2007, his senior season, he went 3-3 with a 6.48 ERA in 22 appearances for the Golden Panthers. As a junior, the native of Greenville, N.C., led FIU with 10 wins and 126.1 innings pitched, fanning 117 during the season and putting together a 4.33 ERA.

Entering his eighth year of professional baseball, Pike had a stellar season for the Surf in 2007, his first with the club. Previously a farmhand of the Cincinnati Reds and New York Yankees, the Pontiac, Mich., native led the Can-Am League with 24 saves and was second in the circuit with 47 appearances. Pike had a 2-1 record and a 3.04 ERA in 50.1 innings pitched to help lead Atlantic City to a playoff berth.

The Atlantic City Surf open their 2008 Can-Am League home schedule on May 26 against the league's newest member, the Ottawa Rapidz. Season and single-game tickets are available by calling the Surf ticket office at (609) 344-7873.
