Surf Fall to Ducks in Home Opener

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (May 9, 2003) - Long Island pounded out 10 runs on 14 hits and limited the Surf offense to just four hits to spoil Atlantic City's home opener, 10-0, Friday evening in front of 3,205 fans at the Sandcastle.

Patrick Lennon put the Ducks up early with a one-run single in the first inning that scored Doug Jennings. Long Island never looked back as it tallied four runs in the third inning and five more in the final four innings.

Long Island starter Bryan Rekar (1-0) tossed five innings of shutout baseball, allowing four hits while striking out three and walking zero.

Relievers Jon Cannon and Jason Dennis pitched the final four scoreless innings to seal the victory for the Ducks.

Lennon paced Long Island going 2-5 with two RBI while Derrick Gibson added two hits and two RBI for the Ducks.

Vernon Spearman had a triple for Atlantic City.

Atlantic City hurler Andy Zwirchitz (0-1) allowed six runs on six hits while striking out two and walking two to pick up the loss.

The Surf and the Ducks will return to action for the second game of the series on Saturday, May 10, at 6:35 p.m., at the Sandcastle.
