
Surf Add Pitcher, Catcher; Valentin Shipped To Pride

Atlantic City, N.J. -- The Atlantic City Surf of the Can-Am League have announced the signing of catcher William Plaza and righthanded relief pitcher Aaron Easton.
Plaza spent the 2007 season with Charlotte County of the South Coast League, where he played under current Surf manager Cecil Fielder. In 61 games for the Redfish, the 25-year-old led the squad with a .330 average to go along with 30 RBI and 11 doubles. The native of Cuba had previously spent the 2004 and 2005 seasons in the New York Yankees' farm system.
Easton played for both Anderson and Charlotte County of the SCL in 2007. In 36 appearances between the two teams, Easton went 3-7, striking out 59 hitters in 61 innings of work. Originally a 29th-round draft pick by Florida in the 2004 draft, the native of Norway, Maine, spent two seasons in the Marlins' organization. He pitched for Florence of the independent Frontier League in 2006.
Finally, pitcher Dan Valentin, who was recently acquired by the Surf in a trade with Fort Worth of the American Association for outfielder Ed Montague, was sent to Nashua of the Can-Am League in exchange for a player to be named later.
HAMMONTON TO FACE ST. JOE AT BERNIE ROBBINS STADIUM
More high-school baseball is on tap for Bernie Robbins Stadium this spring, as Hammonton will face St. Joseph in a Cape-Atlantic League game at the ballpark on Friday, May 16 at 7:00 p.m. Admission and parking to the game will be free of charge.
The game between the two rivals will take place the day before Atlantic City High School takes on Holy Spirit at Bernie Robbins on Saturday, May 17 at 7:00 p.m.
CAN-AM LEAGUE ALUMNI IN BIG-LEAGUE SPRING CAMPS
Several players who previously played for Can-Am League clubs are currently in major-league spring training camps:
-1B John Lindsey (New Jersey 2005-2006) gave Joe Torre his first managerial win for the Los Angeles Dodgers on March 28 with a two-run single with one out in the bottom of the ninth against Atlanta. He is currently hitting .375 in five games for the Dodgers.
-LHP Craig Anderson (Brockton 2005) has not allowed a run in two appearances for Baltimore.
-RHP Jeff Harris (Quebec 2003-2004) started Cleveland's February 28 game against Houston. He has not allowed a baserunner in two outings for the Indians.
-C Ryan Smith (Elmira 2004-2005) has made two appearances behind the plate for the Chicago White Sox.
-RHP Joe Winkelsas (Elmira 2004, Grays 2005) has made one relief appearance for the Chicago White Sox.
