Danville Dragons News Release

DANVILLE, IL - This morning the Danville Dragons announced that a NFL Super Bowl Champion has given his full endorsement to the franchise. Earl Christy, former New York Jets defensive back who was a member of the 1969 Super Bowl III World Champions, has officially put his stamp of approval on the Dragons and has been named, "Sports and Community Ambassador for the Dragons." Christy is still an active part of the New York Jets and the NFL. Two years ago, Christy was given a game ball by Rex Ryan for his dedication and service. He is looking to build the community of Danville.

Christy will be in attendance at the David S. Palmer Arena in Danville to sign autographs and take pictures with fans sometime this upcoming season. Christy will also speak privately with the team prior to the game, and receive an honor during half-time. The date of the game will be decided and announced as soon as the Dragons 2012 schedule is released.

"Behind the leadership of owner David Hawkins, the Dragons franchise is truly on the right path. It is my pleasure and with great sincerity that I put my full support behind the team," stated Christy.

Since retiring from the NFL, Christy has changed the lives of many around the world. He has spent time working with the Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, different senior citizens community living centers, the YMCA and many other organizations. He also continues to work as a motivational speaker around the United States and abroad. Additionally, Christy is an ordained minister, a bishop and also works with Teammates Team-up, which focuses on fighting bullying.

"Earl Christy endorsing the Dragons is a testament not only to our franchise but even more so a testament to the city of Danville. On behalf of the Dragons, I would like to welcome Earl to the Dragon's family," said Dragons Owner David Hawkins.

As part of his endorsement and acknowledgment of the importance that the franchise has placed on community, Christy has also approved the proposed "Earl Christy Award for Outstanding Academics and Community Involvement." One area high school and college student will receive the award based on a submitted letter on those topics, and recommendations from teachers, counselors and community leaders. A panel which will be selected prior to the season will decide the recipients. "From the beginning it has been the idea that this is Danville's team and this is just another step to enhance the community," stated Christy.

Prospective players looking to be part of the Dragons should e-mail head coach Jarrod Rogol at coachrogol@danvilledragons.com. The Dragons will kick off the season in March 2012.
