Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
PEARL, Miss. - The Jacksonville Suns (25-17) finished off a ten-game road trip with a series victory over the Mississippi Braves, winning the finale of a five-game series at Trustmark Park by a score of 5-2.
The victory moved the Suns to within a half game of the Braves as the team arrives home for a brief five-game home stand on Thursday. After taking the first two games of the set with the Braves, Jacksonville had dropped games three and four before rallying to beat Mississippi in the fifth contest on Tuesday.
The Suns fell behind in the second inning behind starter Adam Conley (4-1), who surrendered his only two runs of his outing in the frame. Edward Salcedo started the scoring with a solo home run to center off Conley that gave the Braves an early 1-0 lead. Several batters later, Luis Nunez picked up an RBI on a groundout that scored Dan Brewer and extended the advantage to 2-0.
Conley would not allow another run over his final four innings of work, picking up his fourth straight win in the process. Conley allowed just five hits over the six frames, only striking out one Brave but also issuing just one walk.
Meanwhile, Jacksonville began chipping away at Braves starter Aaron Northcraft (1-3). The Suns put a pair of base runners on in the third for Christian Yelich, who drove in Chris Gutierrez with a groundout to second to cut Mississippi's lead in half. The next batter, Jake Marisnick, reached on a sharply struck infield single, plating Noah Perio to tie the game at two.
Perio would also play a part in the Suns' next run in the top of the fourth. With two runners on, Perio singled to left, scoring Mark Canha to give Jacksonville their first lead of the game. It was a lead the Suns would not give up.
Yelich stepped to the plate two batters later and smacked a single to right, scoring J.T. Realmuto. Although Perio was thrown out trying to score to end the inning, the Suns had opened up a two-run lead.
Ryan Fisher's RBI single in the fifth put the Suns up by three runs and also ended the scoring for the night. Jacksonville's bullpen made sure the advantage stood, as Edgar Olmos, Arquimedes Caminero and Michael Brady each threw a scoreless inning to close out the Suns' series-closing triumph.
Brady's effort earned him his eighth save in 2013, while Caminero's scoreless eighth frame was his eighth straight scoreless outing.
The Suns now head home after a ten-game road-trip to take on the Birmingham Barons at Bragan Field at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. The team will have an off day on Wednesday before beginning the five-game series with the Barons, who currently sit atop the Southern League North division. Right-hander Jay Jackson (2-1, 2.45) will make the start for Jacksonville, opposed by Birmingham righty Stephen McCray (4-3, 2.86). First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m. ET.
Suns fans can listen to Thursday's game on the Suns Baseball Network, 94.1 WSOS-FM or through jaxsuns.com, MiLB.com or the Suns iPhone or Android app, beginning at 6:50 p.m. ET with the UF and Shands Suns Pre-Game Show.
