Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp News Release
Birmingham, Ala. - The Birmingham Barons (35-45, 3-7) committed eight errors in the Alabama heat Wednesday afternoon while the Jacksonville Suns (49-31, 8-2) recorded fifteen runs and hits for a 15-7 victory at Regions Park.
The eight Birmingham errors came one short of tying a league record for errors in a game by a single team (9) set in April of 1971 by the Birmingham Barons in a game against the Memphis Chicks.
In the sweltering midday start the offenses for both sides warmed up quickly. Birmingham scored three in the first inning on Suns starter Mike Megrew with a three-run double to open a 3-0 lead.
Jacksonville quickly bounced back against Birmingham starter Ryan Wing with a three-run second inning, including a two-run double from James Tomlin and a RBI single from Kevin Howard to tie the game 3-3. The Suns scored four more in the third inning with a bases loaded walk, bases loaded hit-by-pitch and a two-run error. Three of the runs were credited to Wing, while the fourth went to reliever Kris Honel. Honel stayed in the game for the next three innings, giving up a Jimmy Rohan two-run single in the fourth inning, followed later by another Barons error that allowed the third run of the inning. Birmingham only plated one run in the second and third innings and Jacksonville sat with a commanding 10-5 lead through four innings.
The Suns continued scoring on Honel in the fifth inning as Anthony Raglani singled home Kevin Howard to open an 11-5 lead. Birmingham's Donny Lucy smashed a two-out homerun off of Suns reliever Mark Alexander in the fifth inning to cut the Suns advantage to 13-6. After allowing a leadoff walk followed by three straight outs in the sixth, Honel returned to work in the seventh inning allowing two runs, one from an A.J. Ellis single and the other from a Cory Dunlap hit off of the next reliever Corwin Malone, giving Jacksonville a 13-6 lead.
Birmingham ended their scoring in the seventh as Shawn Garrett hit a leadoff homerun to shave the Suns lead to 13-7. Jacksonville plated two more runs in the eighth inning off of Corwin Malone with an Alberto Concepcion RBI groundout followed by a Raglani RBI infield single to end the scoring at 15-7.
Suns starter Mike Megrew allowed five runs, four earned, in a four inning start without a decision. Reliever Mark Alexander (3-0) picked up the win after allowing only two solo homeruns in three innings. Birmingham starter Ryan Wing (3-2) lost the game after allowing six runs, five earned, in two and two-thirds innings.
The Suns and Barons meet in the fifth game of a scheduled six Thursday at 8:05 p.m. Suns RH Joey Norrito will face Barons LH Wes Whisler. Fans can follow the action in Jacksonville live on AM 930 The Fox or online at jaxsuns.com.
