JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Despite grabbing an early lead, the BayBears' offense was sleepy on Saturday night at the Baseball Grounds as the Jacksonville Suns walked away with their third consecutive victory, 6-2 over the BayBears, to claim the series win.
Aaron Thompson (3-8) had been beaten twice by the BayBears (37-32) this season, but he was sharp on Saturday with his only blemish coming in the second as Sean Coughlin lifted a long home run over the right-center field bleachers. Thompson wouldn't surrender another run while holding the BayBears to just four hits in six frames.
Barry Enright (5-5) let the 1-0 advantage slip away in the bottom of the second as Scott Cousins reached on a fielder's choice and advanced all the way to third on an errant pickoff attempt by Enright. Cousins scored the tying run on a sac fly by Kevin Randel.
Jacksonville (34-35) put the boots to Enright in the fourth as they connected with three doubles to score three runs. Logan Morrison led off the frame with a two-bagger and scored on Cousins' double to put the Suns on top. After Randel walked, Tim Torres doubled to left-center which brought home a pair.
Whatever doubt there was about a Jacksonville victory was erased in the sixth as Chris Hatcher and Chris De La Cruz came through with consecutive run-scoring singles to bring home Cousins and Torres. Enright was chased from the contest after coughing up eight hits and five earned runs in 5 1/3 innings.
Following Thompson, Jacksonville's pen was strong as Chris Leroux tossed two innings while only allowing an unearned run. Henry Owens finished it in the ninth. Reid Mahon and Scott Maine came kept the Suns off the board over the final 2 2/3 innnings.
The BayBears wrap up their five-game series in Jacksonville and the first half on Sunday afternoon at 2:05 with knuckleballer Houston Summers making his Double-A debut. The BayBears return home to host the West Tenn Diamond Jaxx on Monday, June 22 at 7:05 p.m. where 51 America's Junior Miss contestants will simultaneously throw out a ceremonial first pitch.
