Hagerstown Suns News Release
EASTLAKE, OH -The Hagerstown Suns (24-41) were swept for the third time in the month of August as the Lake County Captains (33-31) took three games in a row at Classic Park, the third by a score of 5-4.
The Suns took an early lead as shortstop Jose Lozada and first baseman Tim Pahuta hit back-to-back doubles in the top of the first inning, giving the Suns a 1-0 lead.
Lake County battled back with a run of their own in the bottom of the first frame to tie the game at 1-1, but Hagerstown notched another tally in the top of the second as second baseman Blake Stouffer doubled and scored on a single by center fielder Mark Gildea.
Hagerstown extended their lead in the top of the third inning as Lozada singled and after reaching third on a fielder's choice hit by right fielder Jesus Valdez, scored on a sacrifice fly by catcher Sean Rooney.
A run in the bottom of the third for the Captains off Suns starter Terrence Engles made it a one run game, before Hagerstown stretched the lead to 4-2 as DH Garrett Bass walked and was later driven in on Lozada's second double of the game.
The lead would prove to be short-lived, however as two runs on three hits and a hit by pitch in the home half of the fourth inning tied the game at 4-4.
The score remained tied until the bottom of the eighth inning when Lake County catcher Richard Martinez hit his fifth home run of the season off Suns reliever Chris Lugo (2-2).
Lugo took the loss for Hagerstown, as the Suns failed to score in the top of the ninth inning. The right hander from Hoboken, NJ struck out four batters in two innings and Martinez's home run was the only hit he allowed.
Reliever John Gaub (1-1) worked two scoreless innings for Lake County to pick up the win, while Dallas Cawiezell retired the Suns in the ninth for his second save of the season.
The Suns will attempt to break their three-game losing streak on Thursday, August 28th against the Lakewood BlueClaws at FirstEnergy Park in Lakewood, NJ. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 P.M.
Hagerstown was swept by the BlueClaws last time the two teams faced off, a four game series at Municipal Stadium ending on August 9th. The Suns also lost four straight to the Columbus Catfish from the 15th to the 18th of August in Columbus.
