Pittsfield Suns News Release
PITTSFIELD, MA - The Pittsfield Suns were victorious against the Nashua Silver Knights Saturday evening at Wahconah Park in front of a record-breaking crowd of 5,461. The Suns plated two runs in the ninth inning to come from behind to win 4-3.
It was a pitchers duel until the sixth inning as Nashua's Kevin Veilleux and Pittsfield's Adam Erkis were solid on the mound until the sixth inning.
In the top of the sixth the Silver Knights were scored two runs on four hits. The inning started with a one-out double by Manny Cruz, followed by back-to-back singles from Max Burt and Tyler Schwanz allowing Cruz to score. After another single by Ryan Sullivan, burt was able to score to give Nashua a 2-0 lead.
Pittsfield evened the score up in the bottom of the frame. Cam O'Neill led off the inning with a double and would advance and score on two sacrifice groundballs from Josh Hassell and Jeremy Giles. Three batters later, Nashua reliever Cameron LaFleur would peg Derek Gardella with a pitch to plate the tying run.
Nashua reclaimed the lead in the seventh inning after a single from Jack Halpin and a triple by Cruz to give the Silver Knights a 3-2 advantage, but Pittsfield wasn't going down without a fight.
The Suns needed two runs to win and they found a way to do it in the bottom of the ninth. Derek Bauer would pinch run for Gardella, who led off the inning with a walk. Bauer advanced to second on sacrifice and reach third on a single from Dan Palazzo. With two outs O'Neill smacked a single to plate Bauer from third to tie the game at two. Palazzo stood at second and watched Hassell step to the plate. With a 3-2 count Hassell managed to drop a hit just out of reach of the Nashua defense to allow Palazzo to score the fourth and final run of the game, giving the Suns a walk-off 4-3 victory.
Erkis remained solid on the mound for the Suns, going five and two-thirds innings and relinquishing two runs, two walks and eight hits. Peyton Taylor, who went two innings, would get the win for the Suns. Cameron LaFleur recorded the loss.
The Suns are back at Wahconah Park Wed. July 8th for Suns Jersey Lunchbox Giveaway. The first 500 fans will receive a Pittsfield Suns Jersey Lunchbox, sponsored by the Pittsfield Cooperative Bank. For tickets call (413)445-SUNS or visit pittsfieldsuns.com.
