Suns Blown Out By Silver Knights, 16-2

The Suns lost their fifth straight game on Thursday night, and it was an ugly one. The visiting Nashua Silver Knights routed the Suns 16-2, and very little seemed to go the home team's way.
Suns' starter Jamin McCann struggled throughout 5.1 innings of work. The southpaw from Kingsport, Tennessee allowed a Mickey Gasper three-run homerun in the third inning that broke Nashua's lead open, 4-0. McCann gave up another long ball in the next inning, when DH Anthony Meduri socked a solo shot to left field that made it a 5-0 game.
McCann would go on to allow six more runs. However, only six of the 11 total runs he gave up were earned. McCann yielded 12 hits and lost his second game of the season.
However, there were some highlights for Pittsfield's arms. Steadfast Suns fans that stayed for all nine innings were treated to a couple of unexpected pitching appearances late in the game. Shortstop Thomas Hughes was called to the mound with two outs in the eighth inning. Hughes let the Suns' coaches know he would be a future bullpen option, striking out Gasper to end the frame.
In the top of the ninth inning, DH Spencer Tinkel took the rubber. The College of the Holy Cross rising sophomore was effective as a reliever; Tinkel threw one shutout inning, allowing just one hit. He issued no walks and even got Meduri to hit into an inning-ending, 4-6-3 double play.
Nashua's Taylor Doyle (2-1, 3.57 ERA) did plenty to keep the Silver Knights in control throughout the game. Doyle hurled seven strong innings of four-hit, two-run ball. He walked four batters and struck out two to earn his second win of the season.
Doyle's only blunders came against Suns' catcher Chris Cimmino, who manufactured the Pittsfield's only runs of the game. Cimmino hit a sacrifice fly in the fifth inning to score John Nollet, and then plated Tyler Brosius in the seventh inning on a groundout to second base.
Nashua's batters pounded out 19 hits, thanks to great hitting from Harry Roberson and Gasper. Roberson, an infielder out of Amherst College, reached base five times on four hits and one walk. Roberson had 6 RBI and scored three runs.
Gasper added two doubles to his homerun in the third inning, putting together an impressive 3-for-6, 3 RBI game. The catcher extended his phenomenal 2016 campaign, raising his FCBL-leading batting average to .440.
The Suns (12-18) are locked in a third-place tie in the West Division with the Torrington Titans. They will look to snap their losing streak and create some breathing room tomorrow night against the Brockton Rox (12-19). The first pitch is set for 7:00 P.M. at Wahconah Park.
