Jacksonville, Fla. - Tom Koehler and Kris Harvey combined on a six-hit shutout while Ozzie Martinez recorded three hits, including a two-out, three-run home run in the fifth inning, leading the Jacksonville Suns (62-46, 22-16) to a 5-0 win over the Birmingham Barons (37-71, 13-25) in front of 5,073 Tuesday night at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.
Koehler (13-2) secured his league-leading 13th winning decision after dealing six scoreless innings with six hits, two walks and a season-best eight strikeouts. Koehler now leads the Southern League with 112 strikeouts. Harvey (2) collected a three-inning save after allowing only a ninth inning walk. Barons starter Matt Long (5-7) took the loss, giving up four runs and six hits with seven strikeouts over six innings.
Jacksonville opened the scoring in the second inning against Long. Brandon Tripp led off with a double, moved to third on a one-out single from Tim Torres and scored on a John Otness sacrifice fly for a 1-0 score.
In the fifth inning, Torres led off with an infield hit before Lorenzo Scott was hit by a pitch with two out. Ozzie Martinez next hit a three-run home run onto the left field lawn, opening a 4-0 Suns lead.
The Suns added an insurance run in the eighth inning against reliever Anthony Carter. Martinez led off with a single and stole second base. Vinny Rottino moved Martinez to third base on a fly out to right field before a Matt Dominguez sacrifice fly plated Martinez for a 5-0 score.
The shutout win was Jacksonville's 10th of the season, the second-most in the Southern League (Montgomery-13). The Suns improved their record against Birmingham in 2010 to 18-3.
