Arizona Sundogs News Release
PRESCOTT VALLEY, Ariz. - For the second time in as many nights, the Arizona Sundogs and New Mexico Scorpions skated in a Southwest Division battle in which only four points separate the first and last place clubs. Arizona would go down 3-0 in the first period, only to come back scoring four unanswered goals to get the overtime win. With the win the Sundogs improve to 11-10-1 (23 points) and sit in a tie for second place with Odessa, one point behind division leading Lubbock.
The first ten minutes of the first period belonged to the Sundogs as they came out firing out shooting New Mexico in hopes of reversing last night's result. At the 11:08 mark, New Mexico would climb on the scoreboard first with a power play goal to take a 1-0 lead. Craig MacDonald would score on a pass from Mike Falk and Rob Guinn. MacDonald would collect his second goal of the night just 28 seconds from Ryan McLeod and new signee Josh Garbutt. At 11:59, the Scorpions' Lance Herauf and Arizona's Jon Landry would square off in a scramble resulting in Herauf receiving a game misconduct for his jersey not being properly tied down. With less than one minute to play in the first period, Mike Prpich would tally New Mexico's second power play goal of the night from Mike Falk to give New Mexico a 3-0 lead.
In a quiet second period, the Sundogs would come out a different team holding the Scorpions scoreless. Karl Sellan would team up with defenseman Michael Vernace to get the Sundogs on the scoreboard on a power play goal at 12:42 of the period. Mike Falk would be tagged with a four-minute high sticking double-minor giving way for the Sellan goal.
The third period belonged to the Sundogs who outshot New Mexico 13-6. The Sundogs would cut the Scorpions' lead to one at the 8:21 mark with David Svagrovsky notching his second goal of the year, assisted by Chris Greene and Martin Doyle. Less than two minutes later, Brent Kelly would score on the power play evening the game at three on a pass from Chris Bartolone. With five seconds to play in regulation, the Scorpions' Falk would be tripped giving his club a 4-on-3 power play to start overtime.
The Sundogs would kill off the Scorpions' power play to open the extra frame and with only half of the five-minute overtime period remaining would score to steal two points. Kelly would tally his second goal of the night on a pass from Cory Stillman, beating netminder Scott Reid.
Arizona outshot New Mexico in the contest 40-28. The Sundogs' Kris Mayotte stopped 25 shots in the win while Reid stopped 36. The Sundogs finished 2-for-7 on the power play while the Scorpions finished 2-for-9. The Sundogs are off until Friday, December 22 when they take on the Colorado Eagles in Loveland, Colorado. Game time is set for 7:05pm and can be heard live on 96.7 FM The Wolf, the Official Broadcast Home of the Arizona Sundogs.
In roster moves, the Arizona Sundogs have waived forward L.P. Martin and signed Cedric Bernier, brother of current Sundogs defenseman Jonathan Bernier.
