Corpus Christi IceRays News Release
On a day game in front of thousands of elementary school students, the Arizona Sundogs played the role of school bullies. Special teams were the difference on Wednesday Morning as the Arizona Sundogs beat the Corpus Christi Rayz 5-1 in the 4th Annual Cool School Day Game, presented by the American Bank Center, SMG and The City of Corpus Christi. The Sundogs scored three power play goals and Andrew Gallant was strong in net all day long, en route to their fifth straight victory. The loss snapped the Rayz point streak at four games, handing the Rayz their first regulation loss since November 24th. The Rayz will remain home to continue their five-game homestand on Saturday Night when they face the Laredo Bucks at 8:05pm. Tickets are on sale now. Please call 814-PUCK for more information, or visit the Rayz online at www.ccrayz.com
The Sundogs power play was the story of the opening period. Referee Ian Croft gave the Dogs four consecutive power play chances to start the game, including a two-man advantage, and the top ranked power play unit took full advantage. The Dogs took a 1-0 lead at 9:03 on a power play when Sean Sullivan took a feed from behind the net at the right circle and beat Jason Tapp for his fifth goal of the year. The Sundogs then capitalized on their two-man advantage when Tyler Redenbach found David Schlemko cutting back door down the left wing and fed him for a one-timer that made it 2-0 at 12:14. The Dogs outshot the Rayz 11-10 in the period and took a two goal lead into the second period.
In the second period, the Sundogs tacked on two to their lead to take a 4-0 lead. The Dogs didn't take long to get on the board. Schlemko scored on a screened slapshot from the blue line just 26 seconds into the middle frame and leading rookie scorer, Matt Kolanos tallied on a rebound at 7:48 on a Sundogs power play. The Sundogs outshot the Rayz 10-8 in the second period.
The Rayz got on the board early in the third with a power play goal from Kevin Watters at 1:20 and looked to gain some momentum, but the Sundogs stopped that with a quick response. Jason Visser scored 23 seconds later at 1:43 to complete the scoring and the 5-1 Arizona victory.
Tapp made 24 saves on 29 shots and took the loss, falling to 5-10-2. Gallant improved to 9-2 with the win, turning aside 31 of 32 shots. The Rayz went 1-7 on the power play and the Sundogs were 3-7. The Rayz outshot the Sundogs 32-29.
