Memphis Xplorers News Release

Southaven – Memphis Xplorers wide receivers/defensive backs Scott Cunningham and Deon Giddens, along with Team Xplosion dancer Jenna Crawford, visited two public libraries in the North Mississippi area on Wednesday, June 1 to kick off the Xplorers involvement in the local libraries' Summer Reading Programs.

The trio took turns reading to children and animating stories while at the Senatobia Public Library and the M.R. Davis Public Library in Southaven.

At the Senatobia Public Library, the players read "Little Granny Quarterback" by Bill Martin Jr. and Michael Sampson. The story centers on the reflections of an elderly woman who played football in her youth. Afterward the children were encouraged to try on an Xplorers helmet, pads, and uniform, as well as learn a dance team routine.

During the next visit at the M.R. Davis library, the players read Leonard Kessler's "Kick, Pass, and Run." Cunningham picked up a moose hand puppet, and Giddens used a puppet rabbit to help read the story. The two players changed the words to include the Xplorers as the team that wins the game.

After finishing the book one child asked Cunningham, "Is your nickname Moose?" Both Cunningham and Giddens agreed that this was now an appropriate nickname for him.

The Memphis Xplorers Summer Reading Program will be going on throughout the remainder of the af2 season. The team has scheduled readings all around the Mid-South area for the 2005 season. Children who attend these readings receive free Xplorers pencils and complimentary ticket vouchers to check out the next home game. Contact your local library to see if the Xplorers will be in your area soon.

The Xplorers are 7-1 on the season and in first place in the Mid-West Division of the National Conference. The next home game is Saturday, June 11th at 7 p.m. against the Quad City Steamwheelers. Single game tickets start as low as $7 and can be purchased by calling 662-280-9120, visiting the DeSoto Civic Center box office, or by logging onto www.TicketMaster.com today.
