Struggles Continue for Rangers on Sunday in Kingston

It was a rough Sunday in Kingston for the Kitchener Rangers.

The Frontenacs scored three times in a span of 7:12 in the first period on the way to a convincing 6-1 win over the Rangers in front of 3,718 fans at the K-Rock Centre.

It was the second straight loss for the Rangers (37-17-2-0), who got their lone goal of the afternoon from Givani Smith in the second period.

The Frontenacs (31-17-5-3) scored twice on the power play and once shorthanded in the lopsided win. Jeremy Helvig (26-13-5-3) backstopped them to the win in goal, stopping 29 of 30 Rangers shots on the afternoon.

Mario Culina (12-7-2-0) was saddled with the loss, surrendering four goals on 11 shots before being replaced by Luke Richardson who made 11 saves on 13 shots by the hosts.

It took just 57 seconds for the Frontenacs to take the lead on Sunday, as Ted Nichol's sixth goal of the season made it a 1-0 game, from Jason Robertson and Ryan Cranford.

It was 2-0 just 3:25 later, as Linus Nyman scored on the power play, assisted by Cliff Pu and Gabriel Vilardi at 3:22.

Jason Robertson's first goal of the game made it 3-0 Kingston, from Ryan Cranford and Ted Nichol at 7:12, to round out scoring in the opening frame.

Shots on goal in the first period favoured Kingston, 10-7.

Robertson's second of the game and 38th of the season from Nichol and Cranford at 4:43 ended the afternoon of Culina, who was replaced by Richardson in the Rangers' goal.

Smith put the Blueshirts on the board with his 15th of the season, unassisted, at 7:32.

With the Rangers on the power play it was the Frontenacs who struck once again, as Vilardi made it a 5-1 game, shorthanded, from Brett Neumann at 12:52.

The final goal of the game came on the stick of Pu, his 23rd of the campaign and a power play marker, from Robertson and Vilardi at 14:53 of the second period.

The Rangers were 0-for-2 on the power play, while the Frontenacs were 2-for-2 with the man advantage plus added the shorthanded goal.

Ted Nichol (KGN) (3), Jason Robertson (KGN) (2), and Jeremy Helvig (KGN) (1) were selected as the Three Stars of the Game.

Logan Stanley, Adam Mascherin, and Givani Smith each wore an "A" and skated as alternates to Rangers' captain Connor Bunnaman.

The Rangers take on the Ottawa 67's tomorrow, February 19 for a Family Day meeting at 2pm in the nation's capital. They return to the Memorial Auditorium on Friday, February 23 when they play host to the Sudbury Wolves at 7:30pm.
