Strong Sunday Performances Propel Norfolk's Tiffee And Durham's Seo To Player Of The Week Honors
Published on July 23, 2007 under International League (IL1) News Release
The International League announced today that Norfolk third baseman Terry Tiffee and Durham pitcher Jae Seo have been named the League's Batter and Pitcher-of-the-Week for the period from July 16-22. It's the second IL weekly award in the last three weeks for Seo, who also won the honor for the period from July 2-8. Tiffee is the third member of the Tides to win an IL weekly award this year, joining last week's Pitcher-of-the-Week Craig Anderson and outfielder Tike Redman, who was named Batter-of-the-Week May 14-20.
Norfolk's TERRY TIFFEE has been among the League's hottest hitters in July, and there was little the Toledo and Columbus pitching staffs could do to slow him down this week. Tiffee hit at a .462 clip over the past seven days (12-26), leading the IL with 12 RBI, five doubles, eight extra-base hits, and a 1.000 slugging percentage. Tiffee has hit safely in 14 of his last 15 games, and for the month of July he is batting .364 (24-66) with four homers and 20 RBI. Four of his last five games were multi-hit efforts, including a 3-3 afternoon Thursday against Toledo and a 3-4 game last night against the Clippers. In Sunday's affair, Tiffee led the Tides to a 7-2 victory, launching a three-run homer in the 3rd inning and adding a solo shot in the 8th to give him a season-high 4 RBI for the game. Thanks in no small part to Tiffee's emergence, the Norfolk Tides have won 10 of their last 14 ballgames and are approaching the .500 mark for the first time since April 13.
28-year-old Terry Tiffee is in his first year in the Baltimore organization after signing as a free agent in the offseason. He split the last three seasons between the Rochester Red Wings and the Minnesota Twins, playing 219 games in the International League and 91 in the Major Leagues. He hit .226 with 5 HR and 29 RBI during his time with the Twins. Tiffee is a native of North Little Rock, AR.
The IL's hottest pitcher these days might very well be Durham's JAE SEO, who has allowed a total of two runs in his last five appearances. This week the Bulls were on the road, where Seo defeated Louisville and Indianapolis to improve his Triple-A record to 5-1. On Tuesday, Seo pitched 7.0 strong innings at Louisville Slugger Field, holding the Bats to one run on five hits as the Bulls went on to win the game 10-2. He was even better yesterday in Indianapolis, where he blanked the Indians for 8.0 innings. Seo scattered five hits while striking out a season-high seven batters. In four July starts, Seo is 4-0 with a 0.66 ERA, having surrendered 20 hits in 27.1 innings with 22 strikeouts and three walks. He was the only pitcher in the International League to win two games this week. Durham has now won seven of its last eight games to pull within 0.5 games of the Wild Card.
30-year-old Jae Seo began the 2007 campaign in the Tampa Bay starting rotation, but was designated for assignment June 2 after posting a 3-4 record with a 8.13 ERA. Ten days later he accepted an assignment to Durham. Seo has played in parts of six seasons in the Major Leagues with the Mets (2002-05), Dodgers (2006), and Devil Rays (2006-07). Seo is a native of Gwangju, South Korea.
