Strong Start by Donnelly Helps SteepleCats Hold off Mountaineers

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. - North Adams SteepleCats starter pitcher Robert Donnelly (New City, N.Y./SUNY Oswego) threw six scoreless innings, leading the 'Cats past the Vermont Mountaineers, 8-3 on Wednesday in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action.

The SteepleCats got out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to an RBI single by Dillon Paulson (San Elijo, Ca./USC), scoring Michael Gulino (Meriden, Conn./Pace) from second base. The next batter, Ryan Schalch (Novato, Ca./Pacific), singled to left field, brining in Tyler Walters (Saegertown, Pa./Slippery Rock), who reached on a walk earlier in the frame.

North Adams continued the scoring in the second with an RBI single by Dustin Shirley (Los Angeles, Ca./Dartmouth). Center fielder Bryce Peterson (Enumclaw, Wash./UCF), who singled and stole both second and third, came across to score, making it 3-0.

The Mountaineers mustered their first hit of the game in the fifth inning with a two-out single to center by Abdel Guadalupe (Davie, Fla./Broward).

The onslaught continued for North Adams in the sixth inning with a Liam Sabino (East Stroudsburg, Pa./Pitt) double, scoring Ryan Schalch. Later in the inning, Bryce Peterson hit a deep homer over the left field fence, making it 6-0 SteepleCats.

Vermont scored two runs in the top of the eighth. Chase Grant (Carlsbad, Ca./Nevada) doubled off of reliever Tim Fallon (Prince Frederic, Md./UMass Lowell), bringing Nick Ward (Kennett Square, Pa./West Chester) home. Pinch hitter Brett Malm (Medford, N.Y./Adelphi) then hit an RBI single, scoring Grant from second.

Vermont started lefty Grady Miller (Wenatchee, Wash./Portland), who went five and two-thirds innings, giving up five earned runs on eleven hits. He also struck out three batters and walked two. Miller suffered his first loss of the season.

The Mountaineers brought out Brian Eddy (Worchester, Mass./Indiana St.) in relief of Miller. Eddy went two and two-thirds innings, allowing one hit, striking out two, and walking three.

Donelly, who allowed just one hit, picked up the win for North Adams.

The Mountaineers (6-6) drop their second straight game. Vermont will have the day off Thursday before traveling to Laconia, N.H. to take on the Winnipesauke Muskrats on Friday night. First pitch is at 6:05 and the game can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240-AM WSKI or online through The NECBL Broadcast Network.
