Lake County Captains News Release
(Eastlake, OH) - The Lake County Captains (29-22) offense struck out a season high 14 times in a 3-0 loss to the South Bend Cubs (22-31) on Sunday at Classic Park.
The Captains offense ran itself out of multiple rallies early, making three outs on the bases. With runners on first and second in the second inning George Valera got caught stealing third, then José Tena got doubled off second on a fly ball from Joe Naranjo to end the second inning. In the third Ray Delgado led off the inning with a single but got picked off first.
South Bend got on the scoreboard against Captains' starter Mason Hickman in the third inning. Josue Huma walked with one out but was forced out at second base on a soft line drive to center field off the bat of Delvin Zinn. Will Brennan scooped the ball up in center and fired to second base to force out Huma. Edmond Americaan singled to extend the inning and put two on base. Nelson Velazquez was up next and slapped an opposite field home run to push across three South Bend runs to take a 3-0 lead.
Hickman (3-4) settled in following the Velazquez home run but took the loss for Lake County. He did not allow a base runner for the rest of his outing, retiring 10 consecutive Cubs. Hickman tossed six innings, allowing two hits, walking two and striking out six.
In the bottom of the ninth the Captains put together a rally against Tanner Jesson-Dalton with two outs.
Bryan Lavastida looped a soft single to center to keep the Captains alive. Valera walked to bring the tying run to the plate with two outs, but Tena struck out to end the threat for Lake County.
Tanner Jesson-Dalton (1) finished the game for the Cubs to earn the save. He worked the final 1.2 innings and escaped the ninth inning jam.
Tyler Suellentrop (2-0) threw 2.1 innings to earn the win for South Bend. He did not allow a hit, walking two and striking out four Captains in the win.
Following an off day on Monday, the Captains begin a six-game road series on Tuesday against the Fort Wayne TinCaps. First pitch for the series opener at Parkview Field is slated for 7:05 p.m.
