Birch Run, MI (February 7, 2005) â The Great Lakes Storm won the game today against the Rockford Lightning 118-105 (5.5, 1.5) to move to 21-13 on the season. The Storm played in front of a season-high crowd of 1,838 fans, a majority of them being students from the surrounding area. Rockford failed to close the gap in the standings as they dropped to 18-15 on the season.
After losing two games in a row after winning nine straight, the Storm needed some home cooking to turn things around. The first of two day games was a huge success, as the teams tipped off at 11:05 am in front of 1,500+ students from the surrounding area. Both teams traded baskets in the first quarter and the Lightning came out on top 23-22 behind 11 points from Brant Bailey. Rockford would lead by as many as ten in the second quarter, however, the Storm battled back behind 12 points by Mark Jones. Ezra Williams made two free throws with :03 left in the half to tie the quarter 38-38. Rockford went into the locker room with a slim 61-60 lead. The Storm regained the lead in the third quarter but could not push the lead into double digits. The Storm won the third quarter 30-24, and also went into the final quarter leading 90-85. The Storm won the final quarter 28-20 as they increased their first place lead in the Eastern Conference standings.
The Storm's next game is on Wednesday, February 9th at home against the Dakota Wizards. Tip-off is set for 7:05 at the Birch Run Expo Center.
