There's been a little bit of everything for the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors already this season.
After picking up one win and one loss in their first two pre-season games, the Majors earned what you can only earn in the pre-season these days in the Ontario Hockey League - a tie.
Derek Schoenmakers scored a pair of goals as the Majors battled the Guelph Storm to a 4-4 tie at Iceland Arena on Thursday night, evening their exhibition record at 1-1-1 in a chippy game that saw a combined 19 power play chances by both teams.
The teams traded goals all night, with the score tied 1-1 after one period and 3-3 after 40 minutes before the teams traded goals yet again in the third period. As per OHL rules there is no overtime or shootout in the pre-season.
"I thought we did a lot of good things out there tonight," Majors General Manager/Coach James Boyd said. "We did a good job keeping the puck away from them most of the night and we battled hard and showed some energy.
"We played a decent game overall and we're at least going in the right direction."
Boyd did feel both teams took too many penalties - especially his own.
"We shot ourselves in the foot by taking some untimely and unnecessary penalties," Boyd added. "The game was played on the power play for 40 minutes and that's way too much."
Guelph went 2-for-10 with the man advantage while the Majors were 1-for-9 with the extra man as there was a parade to the penalty box most of the night.
The Storm opened the scoring on a goal by Scott Kosmachuk at 8:41 of the opening period, his first of two, before David Corrente tied the score for Mississauga five minutes later.
Schoenmakers then went to work with his first of the night on the power play at 8:21 of the second period before Kosmachuk again tied the game on another power play at 10:18. Tanner Richard then put Guelph back in front at 14:05, only to have Schoenmakers answer back less than a minute later to leave the game tied 3-3 after two periods.
Mika Partanen put Mississauga ahead with a pretty breakaway goal just 27 seconds into the third period, but Richard's second of the night at 12:45 on a power play tied the game for the final time.
Richard wound up with two goals and two assists for Guelph, while Brandon Foote made 16 saves in goal for the Storm, who out-shot the Majors 30-20.
Grant Syrette added two assists for the Majors, while Partanen also had an assist to go with his goal. Taylor Edwards made 26 saves in goal for Mississauga.
Majors play the Peterborough Petes Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Port Credit Arena in their next pre-season tilt.
