Storm Takes on Child Abuse

April 14, 2014 - Indoor Football League (IFL)
Sioux Falls Storm News Release

During the Sioux Falls Strom home game against the Wyoming Calvary on April 19th, the team is partnering with the Children's Inn, Waterbury Heating & Cooling, Coleman and Fluxxr to raise awareness about child abuse. April is National Child Abuse Prevention Month. The event seeks to fulfill three purposes: to raise awareness about child abuse, to encourage strong families in the Sioux Empire and to raise money for the Children's Inn.

Children's Inn offers shelter, crisis intervention and on-going counseling to children and women who are victims of domestic violence. The shelter provided services to 554 children during 2013.

There will be multiple ways for fans to be involved during the game. The Storm is asking game goers to create a sea of blue, partially to show support for the team, but also to match the blue ribbon that represents National Child Abuse Prevention month. The first 1000 fans to offer a free-will donation will receive a complimentary "#storm4kids" t-shirt, courtesy of Waterbury Heating & Cooling.

A photo booth will be set up where fans can have a picture taken with a sign saying "We're the (insert family name here) and we stand for Sioux Falls kids." The fans can later tag themselves in the picture on the Storm's facebook page. There will also be areas scattered throughout the arena where fans can offer a free-will donation.

There will also be a number fans can text to donate $5 to the Children's Inn. The number will be displayed in a message on the Jumbotron once per quarter. Texted donations can be made for the three weeks surrounding the game. (Dates) Prior to and after the game, the number will be made available via social media outlets.

At half time, a representative of each of the four supporting organizations will make their way onto the field, where they will share their passion for child abuse prevention as well as making a sweeping donation request.

The event comes just six months after the two-year-old son of Minnesota Vikings' running back Adrian Peterson died from complications due to abuse in a Sioux Falls hospital. Brian Rand of Fluxxr came up with the idea of local businesses partnering with the Strom to raise awareness about child abuse. "It shouldn't take a tragedy for parents to love their kids more," Rand says.
