
Storm signs former NBA player

Birch Run, MI (December 10, 2004) â The Great Lakes Storm announced today the signing of Doug Smith for the 2004-05 season, pending league approval. Per club rules, terms of the contract are confidential.
Smith brings a wealth of experience to the team as he played four seasons for the Dallas Mavericks from 1991-95 and the following season for the Boston Celtics. He was the sixth pick in the 1991 NBA Draft out of the University of Missouri, behind such players as Larry Johnson, Kenny Anderson, and Dikembe Mutombo. In his NBA career he averaged 8.0 ppg, 4.2 rpg, and 1.4 apg. After his NBA playing days were through he played in the CBA from 1996-99. He played for Coach Bergman on the 1997 CBA Championship Oklahoma City Cavalry team and the following two seasons he played for the Quad City Thunder. His CBA career averages are 10.8 ppg, 6.3 rpg, and 2.4 apg.
"The experience that Doug brings to this team is priceless," said Coach Bergman. "He also brings championship experience, winning one with myself in Oklahoma City in 1997, and he also won back-to-back titles with the St. Louis Swarm of the IBL in 2000 and 2001. The best thing about Doug is that he understands what I want and he understands me."
