Tri-City (17-10-1-1) recorded an overtime loss for the first time this season in last night's 5-4 home loss to the Sioux Falls Stampede. The Green Bay Gamblers and Omaha Lancers are now the only two remaining teams in the USHL who have not recorded at least one overtime loss this season. Despite the overtime loss, Tri-City's winning percentage on home ice (.708%) still leads all Western Conference teams this season. The Storm is now 8-3-1-0 on home ice and has played both of its previous games this weekend in front of sold-out crowds at the Viaero Center (capacity limitations and social distancing protocols in effect). Matthew Knies recorded his third multi-goal of his USHL career and first multi-goal game of the season in last night's game. Knies scored a goal with fourteen seconds remaining in the 3rd period to force overtime. In the 1st period, Mason Wheeler notched the first goal of his USHL career. Wheeler recorded his first multi-point game in the USHL on Friday with two assists and has now registered at least one point in three of his past four games. Caden Villegas has scored in back-to-back games for the first time in his USHL career following last night's 2nd period goal. Villegas was named the 1st Star of the game in Friday's 4-1 victory over Lincoln after netting the game-winning goal and provided Tri-City's offense with an assist. Tonight's game is the third game in Tri-City's ongoing eight-game homestand at the Viaero Center.
Sioux Falls (14-15-3-0) jumped to 5th place in the USHL's Western Conference standings in last night's 5-4 overtime win against the Storm. The Stampede snapped a three-game winless streak in last night's win. Luke Toporowski netted his seventh goal of the season with 49 seconds left to play in overtime to give Sioux Falls the victory. Cole Sillinger scored two goals in the game and now has twelve goals and ten assists in fourteen games with Sioux Falls this season. Of players who have played more than five games in the USHL this season, Sillinger's Points Per Game rate of 1.84 is the 3rd best in the league this year. Nate Schweitzer netted his third goal of the season and Arlo Merritt scored his second goal of the year in last night's road win. Sioux Falls is 107-1-0 in head-to-head matchups against Tri-City over the past five seasons. Sioux Falls now holds a 2-0-1-0 lead in the season series and won last year's season series two games to one. The Stampede improved to 8-0-0-0 when leading after the 1st period and 5-2-2-0 when tied after the 2nd period in last night's road win. Sioux Falls is also 5-4-3-0 in one-goal games this season. Following today's game at the Viaero Center, the Stampede return home for a matchup against Omaha on Saturday.
