KEARNEY - The Tri-City Storm's "Take School by Storm" program recently helped two Kearney elementary schools collect more than $4,000 for new playground equipment.

In November the Storm partnered with Emerson Elementary to raise $1,648 for the school. In January the hockey team worked with Northeast Elementary, which earned $2,436 for a new playground.

As part of the "Take School by Storm" program, the team donates $4 of every $10 ticket sold by participating schools and their students. The schools can designate the money for a project or program of their choice.

"Through this program, we are putting a new spin on fundraising," said Alicia Korte, the Storm's customer relations manager in charge of the program. "We work with the schools to make it fun and exciting while giving students, administrators and PTO members an opportunity to get more involved with raising money for important needs in their schools."

Storm players and team mascot Stormy help kick off the fundraisers by visiting students at school, where they participate in recess, teach hockey in P.E. classes and take part in other classroom activities.

Emerson and Northeast students and staff were presented checks during Storm games, and Northeast Elementary took part in a postgame skate and autograph session with the team.

The Storm is partnering with more Kearney schools this season to help with fundraising efforts, including a Feb. 23 game night for Buffalo Hills Elementary, March 8 with Windy Hills Elementary and March 15 with Park Elementary.
