Waterloo Black Hawks News Release
Take Us to Your Leaders
The Black Hawks meet the United States Hockey League's two best teams on the road this weekend. The Sioux Falls Stampede pace the Western Conference with 60 points. Friday's matchup will be the first home game they have played since defeating Waterloo on January 9th. Saturday's tilt with the Dubuque Fighting Saints matches the Hawks against the only other team with at least 60 standings points. Dubuque is atop the Eastern Conference and the USHL overall with 65. The visits will be Waterloo's second trips to both opposing venues. The Hawks are 2-1-0 versus the Stampede this season and 3-0-0 against the Fighting Saints.
Climbing Toward Top Five
With his next point, Taylor Cammarata will have 132, tying him with Andrew Tortorella for fifth in regular season scoring during the franchise's junior era. Whether that point is a goal or an assist, it will also move him up another rung in that statistical category. Cammarata has scored 53 goals and is one behind Todd Turcotte for tenth while also trailing Joel Hanson by one assist, sitting currently at 78.
Quick on the Draw
The Waterloo Black Hawks held a 1-0 lead in both games against the Green Bay Gamblers last weekend. In fact, the Hawks have scored the first goal in nine consecutive contests since falling behind the Sioux Falls Stampede 4-0 on January 9th. Waterloo and the Dubuque Fighting Saints lead the USHL, having each scored the first goal against their opponents 28 times. Head-to-head, the Black Hawks notched the first goal in all three previous meetings with the Saints.
Regular Contributors
Last weekend, the Hawks reached the 40 game threshold during the 2012/13 season. Only two players have been in the lineup for every contest to this point: defenseman Mark Friedman and forward Pijus Rulevicius. Durability should be no surprise, based on their respective histories in junior hockey. Friedman played in 48 of 49 games for the North York Rangers of the Ontario Junior Hockey League last winter. Rulevicius dressed for 56 of 60 games as a member of the North American Hockey League's Janesville Jets.
Weekly Recap
Zach Stepan recorded a goal and two assists Friday, but after he tied the game with less than eight minutes remaining in the third period, the Green Bay Gamblers scored twice to claim a 6-4 decision. The next night, the rematch went to Waterloo 7-3. The Hawks were led by Mike Huntebrinker, who recorded his first USHL hat trick. Five other Waterloo players scored multiple points in the game. At the other end of the rink, Eamon McAdam had a season-high 41 saves in his 14th victory of the season.
