February 18, 2011 - Indoor Football League (IFL)
Sioux Falls Storm News Release
The Sioux Falls Storm is excited to announce the coaching staff for the 2011 season. Head coach Kurtiss Riggs, defensive and special teams coordinator Andre Fields and offensive line coach Paul Keizer will return to the sidelines after coaching last season. New to the staff are defensive line coach Jared Schwanz and wide receivers' coach Alvin Ashley.
Riggs is entering his ninth year as head coach of the Sioux Falls Storm. Under the leadership of Riggs, the Storm won four consecutive championships from 2005-2008. They also put together a winning streak of 40 games, the longest winning streak of any professional sports team. During his tenure, Riggs has been named Coach of the Year three times, led the Storm to back-to-back undefeated seasons in 2006 and 2007, and has compiled a career record of 106-26.
Andre Fields is in his second year with the Storm. Last season under Fields, the Storm defense totaled 20 interceptions, 21 sacks, 6 forced fumbles and 3 defensive touchdowns. Fields played defensive back for the Storm from 2003 to 2009, starting in all four of the Storm's championship seasons.
Paul Keizer is in his third season with the Storm. Under Keizer's direction, the Storm rushing attack averaged 3.6 yards per carry on 334 rushing plays. Keizer played in 2007 and 2008 with the Storm and was named an All-Star each year. In 2007, Keizer and the rest of the offensive line set team records in rushing yards and total points.
Jared Schwanz joins the Storm after two seasons coaching the defensive line at the University of Sioux Falls. While at USF, Schwanz helped the 2009 Cougar defense rank first overall in scoring defense and total yards allowed. Before joining the USF coaching staff, Schwanz played defensive line at Minnesota State-Mankato in 2005 and 2006. Schwanz has also coached defensive line and tight ends at Minnesota State-Mankato and Southwest Minnesota State.
Alvin Ashley joins the Storm after an 11-year career in the Arena Football League and an assistant coaching stint with Dakota State University. Ashley gained over 7500 receiving yards during that time, along with scoring 162 touchdowns. An Irving, Texas native, Ashley played college football at Southwest Minnesota State University.
"Coach Riggs has put together another outstanding group of coaches," said Storm Owner, Todd Tryon. "We expect this group to lead us through a very competitive 2011 season."
