PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. -- The Charlotte Stone Crabs used a strong start from Jake Thompson and a much needed offensive showing to down the St. Lucie Mets by a 6-3 final on Saturday at Digital Domain Park.

After managing just 11 hits in their prior two contests, the Stone Crabs offense broke through for 15 hits in a series opening victory.

Thompson (4-5) received six runs of support and made it stand up with six innings of one-run ball. He allowed four hits and a single run, walking four while striking out four batters as well.

The two clubs traded third inning runs, but Jake Jefferies put Charlotte ahead to stay with a two-run single in the fourth. That made it a 3-1 game, but the Stone Crabs would add single runs in the sixth, seventh and eighth innings.

St. Lucie made things interesting in the late going. An infield hit by Cesar Puello coupled with a throwing error on Charlotte second baseman Tyler Bortnick made it a 6-3 game. Wilmer Flores belted a deep blast to left field that was run down by Anthony Scelfo, who crashed into the wall while making an inning-ending catch.

Scott Moviel (5-10) allowed three runs on 10 hits over his five innings of work in taking the loss.

Josh Satow came on to close things down after a lead-off walk in the ninth inning. He converted is 12th save in 15 opportunities.

The series continues on Sunday as the two clubs travel to Charlotte Sports Park. Right-hander Merrill Kelly (8-3) will make the start for Charlotte opposite righty Zack Wheeler (0-1). First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m.
